Jazz Alley

Paint on concrete wall

In celebration of the Kuumbwa Jazz Centers 35th anniversary, Marvin Plummer created this mural using photos taken from performances at Kuumbwa. The mural features five portraits of great jazz artists who were chosen by the Kuumbwa Jazz Center as musicians who have been regular visitors to the club over its 35 years. They include bassist Christian McBride, guitarist John Scofield, violinist Regina Carter, trumpeter Roy Hargrove and singer Betty Carter. Kuumbwa executive director Tim Jackson said the five were chosen for their individual connections to Kuumbwa. With the exception of Betty Carter, who was already an established star when we started and who died in 1998, Santa Cruz grew up with these artists.
